      How's Your Prayer Time?

When I was 19, I joined a ministry program called the National Evangelization Teams (NET).  For 10 months I served on a team that travelled to 9 states and put on retreats for nearly 10,000 teens. There were 13 of us on the team, 6 guys and 7 ladies, and we had to live, travel, and minister together.  As you can imagine, with 13 young adults between the ages of 18-28 there was much laughter and friendship, tension and growth.  We loved God, but we were not perfect, so during our year of NET, we were encouraged to have at least an hour of personal prayer time every day.   This was scheduled into our day as well as a time of team prayer (Praise and Worship) and Mass whenever we were close to a Church.  It was prayer that held us together, focused our ministry, and sustained us personally.  The commitment to personal prayer was at times the most challenging thing we had to do.

Shortly after our teams were formed, we were picking up members in our NET van to attend an early morning Mass before resuming our ministry training at the NET Center.  As we picked up a group of ladies from their host family, one of the guys on the team asked the sleepiest lady with her wet hair and mascara on one eye, “How was your prayer time?”  Her toothbrush hindered her response, but her sarcastic smile clearly communicated that she hadn’t been able to squeeze that into her morning ritual.

“HOW WAS YOUR PRAYER TIME?” became a familiar line for us throughout the year, not only to tease each other, but also to encourage each other to grow.  When we met in Men’s and Women’s groups, we talked about it.  In one-on-one discussions, it was a topic.  Even though it really got old, it provided the focus that we needed for that year on NET.  Prayer was more than essential, it was the difference between authenticity and hypocrisy, between transformation and deform-ation, between peace and conflict.

The new life of the Easter season surrounds us, and again God puts this questions to you – How’s your prayer time?  You may be where you want to be, but are you who you want to be?  Are you a source of peace to those around you?  Are you at peace with who you are?  A personal prayer time is not like going to Six Flags or even going on retreat.  It is a discipline and a habit that bears incredible fruit over the years.  It must be done every day.  We all live, travel, and minister with people in our families, our schools, our jobs, our Church and they need us to be people of prayer.  If you serve in any sort of ministry, if you teach or coach, or have children, or talk to people, or eat, breath, or move, you need to be a person of prayer.  There are about a million resources for prayer in our Catholic faith and you can go to our website for a guide on How to Have a Personal Prayer Time.

I thank God for my year on NET and that he is so faithful to his people when we come to him in prayer.  This Eastertime, make the effort to draw close to God in a personal prayer time.  He is waiting and longing to bless you.

We love you and are praying for you every day!

      In Jesus and Mary,
      Doug Weisbruch
